Gabriella DeSimone Named Pac-12 Player of the Week|
April 2, 2013
Sophomore Gabriella DeSimone pinned up two powerful singles wins for the Trojans -- first taking USC to a 3-0 lead against Cal en route to an eventual 6-1 win over the Bears, and then coming through with the clinching win against Stanford. Her winning efforts have locked the sophomore in as the sixth Trojan to be named Pac-12 Player of the Week this season. It's the second career selection for DeSimone as a conference weekly award winner.
DeSimone and teammate Zoë Scandalis had opened up the match against Cal with a doubles win to help spark USC to a sweep on the doubles courts. She'd then stay hot for singles play, beating Annie Goransson in a decisive straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, to avenge a loss to Goransson last season and help put USC within reach of victory over the Bears - another revenge match after Cal beat the Trojans earlier this season in Berkeley.
Against Stanford, DeSimone and Scandalis had their doubles match push to a tiebreaker after the point had already been decided in USC's favor. In singles, DeSimone would pull out a second-set tiebreaker to clinch the match for the Trojans with her 6-1, 7-6 (3) win over Ellen Tsay.
That USC win was the Trojans' first over the Cardinal at Marks Stadium since 2009 and kept USC undefeated in Pac-12 play this season to date. DeSimone and the Women of Troy now hit the road for a stretch of four straight Pac-12 matches, starting in Arizona this week to face ASU and Arizona.
