Trojans On Top: Johnson and Sanchez Stay No. 1

    March 30, 2011

USC tennis boasts the top men's and women's players in the nation once again. Junior Steve Johnson and senior Maria Sanchez have locked in at No. 1 in the Campbell/ITA National Rankings. Matched with 28 singles wins apiece, they've lost only five matches between them this season.

During his current undefeated run through dual-match play, Johnson has taken down five top-10 opponents to stay atop the men's rankings. Sanchez has faced five in the top-11 during the USC women's dual-match stretch, most recently taking on two of the best in the Pac-10 on the way to this week's continued hold on No. 1 in the land. Sanchez also holds high marks on the doubles scene, ranked No. 5 with freshman teammate Kaitlyn Christian.

Johnson and Sanchez both have now appeared at the No. 1 position in the national singles rankings for three rankings cycles this year. This year marks the first No. 1 ranking of Sanchez' career as a Trojan. Johnson appeared at No. 1 last season as a sophomore.

Both teams continue their Pac-10 push this week. The No. 2 USC men (16-2) host Oregon and Washington on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at Marks Stadium, while the No. 14 USC women (11-5) head off to visit the Ducks and Washington State on the road this weekend.
