USC jumps back into action this week with a nonconference clash on the road before getting a look at its first Pac-10 opponents of the year at home. The No. 9 Women of Troy (6-2) take a mid-week trip to San Diego to face No. 60 San Diego State in a 1:30 p.m. match on Tuesday (Feb. 23) for nonconference play. USC then turns to host fellow Pac-10 powers Cal and Stanford at Marks Stadium. The Trojans first face No. 3 Cal at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 26) before taking on No. 11 Stanford at 12 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 27) in an effort to get USC's second straight win over the Cardinal. The Trojans recorded their first win over Stanford in 23 years last season with a victory over the Cardinal at Marks Stadium.
ITA RANKING UPDATES
The latest ITA national team rankings (as of Feb. 18) have USC ranked No. 9. The latest individual rankings also were released Feb. 18. There, Maria Sanchez has climbed up to #3 to lead the Women of Troy, with three other teammates well settled around the nation's top-50. Alison Ramos is up to #19, followed by freshmen #31 Danielle Lao and #51 Valeria Pulido. In doubles, Pulido/Sanchez rank #31.
The Women of Troy did not compete last week in a break from a busy trip to Wisconsin the previous week for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. USC had a tough seed in the tournament, but opened up with a 5-2 win over #15 Clemson to start. That put the Trojans up against top-ranked Duke in the quarterfinals, as USC took its first loss of the year in a 4-2 defeat to the Blue Devils. In USC's final match at the tournament, the Trojans face #5 Baylor and fell 5-2.
San Diego State is ranked No. 60 in the nation and is 4-3 overall after beating Hawai'i 4-3 and falling to Long Beach State 4-3 in its last competition. The Aztecs have #58 Julia Trunk ranked in singles and no ranked doubles teams. USC is 37-4 all-time against SDSU after beating the Aztecs 7-0 in their previous meeting last season.
Cal is ranked No. 3 in the nation and entered the week with a 5-1 overall record. At the ITA National Indoors, the Bears beat Georgia Tech 5-2 and UCLA 4-3 before falling to eventual champion Northwestern 4-3 in the semifinals. Cal has three players ranked in singles: #2 Jana Juricova, #20 Marina Cossou and #75 Mari Andersson. Two Cal doubles teams are ranked: #13 Andersson/Juricova and #54 Cossou/Siwosz. USC is 31-25 all-time against the Bears after beating Cal 4-3 in the teams' only meeting last season at Marks Stadium.
Stanford is ranked No. 11 in the nation and entered the week with a 6-0 overall record after beating Boise State 7-0 last week. The Cardinal have five players ranked in singles: #13 Hilary Barte, #24 Mallory Burdette, #36 Lindsay Burdette, #54 Stacy Tan and #70 Carolyn McVeigh. Two Stanford doubles teams are ranked: #2 Barte/L. Burdette and #37 M. Burdette/Tan. USC is 18-57 all-time against Stanford after snapping a 50-match losing streak to the Cardinal with USC's 5-2 win last season at Marks Stadium.
Junior Cristala Andrews earned a spot on the prestigious All-Tournament Team at the ITA National Team Indoors after an undefeated run at the No. 6 singles position during the tourney.
