Sanchez Strikes Again As Pac-10 Player of the Week|
Feb. 14, 2011
Senior Maria Sanchez had a hand in at least one clinching victory in all three USC wins last week, and has subsequently picked up her second Pac-10 Player of the Week honors of the year. The conference's highest ranked player, Sanchez came through with the winner in the doubles point against San Diego State and Texas, and locked down the match-winning singles victories against South Florida and also against Texas.
Sanchez pinned up straight-set wins in singles in all three matches - taking down both the No. 25 ranked player and the No. 8 player in the nation in the process. In doubles, she and teammate Kaitlyn Christian upset USF's No. 45-ranked team and also beat Texas' No. 87 pair. The winning week, which included a 7-0 win over San Diego State, and 6-1 wins over South Florida and Texas, improved the Trojans to 6-1 overall. Individually, #3-ranked Sanchez's three-win week extends her win streak out to 15 straight singles victories, and she and Christian rank #80 and have now combined forces to wins in nine straight matches.
This is the fourth career Pac-10 Player of the Week award for Sanchez, who won it twice last season as a junior and opened this year's action with her third overall win. She currently holds a 20-1 overall record in singles this season, and has gone 13-1 in doubles with Christian.
