    Kirchner and Olmos Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week

    LOS ANGELES – USC volleyball junior Josh Kirchner and women’s tennis junior Giuliana Olmos were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 19-25, on Monday, Jan 26.

    USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
    Josh Kirchner led the No. 5-ranked Trojans to three victories during the week, as USC remains undefeated on the season. The Trojans began the week with a match against No. 12-ranked Stanford where the junior tallied nine kills in the three-set sweep over the Cardinal. On the road against UC San Diego, Kirchner was back at it again, this time with 12 kills while hitting .588 to lead the Trojans to victory.

    Kirchner and the Trojans brought all of their momentum into a crucial match against No. 3 UC Irvine. Kirchner showcased his stalwart effort with a team-best 15 kills while hitting .312 with six digs, three blocks, and two aces. Ultimately the Trojans claimed a statement victory over the Anteaters in a dramatic five-set match, lasting nearly 2 hours and 40 minutes.  USC is next scheduled to return home to the Galen Center to face No. 11 Long Beach State on Jan. 28 and then Cal State Northridge on Jan. 30.

    Also nominated for men’s student-athlete of the week honors: Robert Ford (track) and Yannick Hanfmann (tennis).

    USC CREDIT UNION WOMEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
    Giuliana Olmos had a great performance on the courts at Marks Stadium for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend competition. In the first dual match against No. 69 Denver, Olmos had a smooth victory in two sets over Gracia Mboko. In doubles, Olmos teamed up with Zoë Scandalis to win 6-4 and clinch the doubles point for the Women of Troy. USC won the match 4-0 to continue to the championship round.

    On Sunday against No. 27 Pepperdine, the junior continued her impressive performance with another win at singles against Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai. In doubles, Olmos and Scandalis continued to dominate with a 6-1 win. USC ended up sweeping Pepperdine to claim a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Trojans are next scheduled to face off against Pepperdine again on Jan. 30.

    The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include Rachel Dobrin, Dru Chavez, Colette Garcia, Melissa Martino, Andrew McKagan, Max Schwartz and intern Katie Ryan.
