Riding the momentum of an upset win over top-ranked Mallory Burdette of Stanford and the ensuing Freeman Memorial singles championship, #19-ranked freshman Zoe Scandalis stepped into the No. 1 singles slot for her first dual match as a Trojan and shut out her UC Irvine opponent. Scandalis tallied the first doubles win and first singles win of the day in USC's season opener, winning 8-2 at the No. 3 doubles position with teammate Valeria Pulido, then took to the singles courts to deliver a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of UC Irvine's Courtney Byron on court one. Scandalis holds a five-match singles winning streak and is now 18-3 overall in singles play.
Sophomore Emilio Gomez stepped into the No. 1 singles spot for the first time in his Trojan career on Sunday and pinned up an overpowering 6-1, 6-1 win over LMU's Alex Wilton to get the ball rolling on USC's first of two shutouts on the day in a season-opening doubleheader. Gomez swept through two doubles wins with cousin and freshman teammate Roberto Quiroz and also dominated his two singles matches. His 6-1, 6-2 win over Greg Scott in the second dual match vs. UC Santa Barbara was the match-winner for the Trojans. Gomez is now 16-3 overall in singles play this season and 4-1 with Quiroz in doubles play with Sunday's two wins.
