    Women Of Troy Earn No. 7 Preseason Ranking

    LOS ANGELES - With two top newcomers and three returners leading the way, the USC women's tennis team has been tabbed No. 7 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in its preseason rankings released on Thursday, Jan 13.

    Topping the preseason list this year is defending NCAA Champion Stanford who garnered 29 first-place votes. Florida enters the year ranked second and Clemson, UCLA, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, USC, Duke, Tulane and Washington round-out the women's top 10.

    The Women of Troy are one of four Pac-10 teams ranked among the top 10. All nine conference teams earned rankings, including No. 17 California, No. 27 Oregon, No. 38 Arizona State, No. 42 Arizona and No. 66 Washington State.

    Five players earned individual singles rankings, including freshmen Nicole Leimbach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Lindsey Nelson (Villa Park, Calif.) who lead the way at No. 6 and No. 29, respectively. Sophomores Anca Anastasiu and Dianne Matias are ranked Nos. 62 and 70, while junior Carine Vermeulen begins the season at No. 78. Nelson and Vermeulen are ranked No. 36 in doubles.

    USC opens the 2005 season this week at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., Jan. 14-16. The dual match season begins Wednesday, Jan. 19, when the Women of Troy host Cal Poly at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
