FLUSHING, N.Y. — USC’s senior-sophomore doubles duo of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith drummed up a Round of 16 win to take a place in the quarterfinals out at the ITA National Indoor Championships in New York. The Trojan pair will go up against the draw’s top seeds tomorrow (Nov. 13) to fight for a spot in the next day’s semis out at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

Olmos and Smith had scored a first-round bye for their doubles journey before lining up against Texas Tech’s Kiro/Valenstein in the afternoon’s Round of 16. The Trojans got up a break in the first set to take that one but would get tangled up in a tiebreaker in the second set. Olmos/Smith buckled in for that one and emerged with the 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory to take their place in tomorrow’s quarterfinals. There, the Trojans will square off against Cal’s top-seeded team of Manasse/Starr.

Olmos had a busy day of it in opening up with a spot in the singles draw. The #10 ranked Trojans had a tough matchup for her opening Round of 32 tilt, coming up against Virginia’s #3 Julia Elbaba, who is seeded No. 6 in the singles bracket. Elbaba proved powerful in this one, winning it 6-0, 6-1 to end Olmos’ run in the singles main draw.
