Doubles Teams Match Up In Tournament Final|

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The USC women's tennis team captured a doubles title as it concluded its fall season on Monday (Nov. 10) at the 2003 Fall Desert Classic at the Desert Princess Country Club in Palm Springs. The Women of Troy tandems of Carine Vermeulen and Dianne Matias, and Judy DeVera and Melissa Esmero faced each other in the doubles title match on the last day of the tourney.
In a USC versus USC battle, it was Vermeulen and Matias who managed to defeat their teammates, 8-6.
The Trojans also enjoyed top performances from senior Bernadette Bayani, who reached the semifinal round of the main draw, and freshman DeVera who fell in the finals of the consolation draw.
Bayani defeated Carolin Walter of Baylor (6-3, 1-6, 7-6), Mia Varovic of Texas (6-3, 7-5) and even upset Texas' 38th-ranked Kendra Strohm in the quarterfinals (6-3, 6-4) before being eliminated by No. 64 Natalie Braverman of Pepperdine, 6-0, 6-1.
After dropping her main draw quarterfinal match, DeVera entered the consolation draw in the quarterfinals. There, she defeated teammate Vermeulen (6-2, 6-2) and Karin Schlapbach of Pepperdine (6-2, 6-4), before falling to Baylor's Walter in the final, 6-2, 6-4.
USC will open the spring season at the Pac-10 Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., Jan. 16-18. The Women of Troy will play their first dual match on Tuesday, Jan. 22, when they host Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
