    Nov. 8, 2015

PALOS VERDES, CALIF. — USC's Zoë Katz put forth an impressive run in the singles draw at the Jack Kramer Intercollegiates, tearing her way to the semifinals with a stretch of four straight wins. The junior was the most successful Trojan at the event, which had six Women of Troy in action.

Ranked #114 in the nation in singles, Katz was the No. 9 seed in the singles draw. After opening up with a tight Round of 64 victory, Katz dished out a powerful Round of 32 win before knocking out the No. 4 seeded player with a three-set comeback victory in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Katz had more firepower in her arsenal as she upended the No. 7 seed with a smooth 6-3, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals. That put Katz in today’s semifinal bout against an upset-minded Mayar Ahmed of Fresno State. Ahmed snagged the first set in a tiebreaker and went on to beat out Katz in the second to end the Trojan’s run in the tourney, while Ahmed went on to win it all with victory in the title match. Of the six Women of Troy in the singles draw, three made their respective journeys into the Round of 16 along with Katz. Sophomore Meredith Xepoleas and freshman Rianna Valdes both had also earned seedings in the draw, and both also nabbed wins in their first two matches before falling in the Round of 16.

In doubles, USC had Valdes and sophomore Madison Westby paired up as the top-seeded duo in the draw. The Trojan pair made their way into the quarterfinals, where Ahmed was waiting in doubles action as well. The Fresno State standout was teamed with her sister, and the Ahmed duo topped the Trojans 8-6 in the quarterfinals on their way to a run to the doubles final.
