Women of Troy Wrap Action at ITA National Indoors|
Nov. 8, 2014
FLUSHING, N.Y. -- USC's trio of Trojans competing at the ITA National Indoor Championships saw their time in New York come to a close today in the consolation rounds. All three Women of Troy went down to the wire in their respective matches, fighting through three sets down the line but coming up on the losing end of those battles at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
After posting first-round consolation wins yesterday, USC's Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis both had tough customers to contend with in today's consolation action. #38 Olmos tangled with Cal's #16 Zsofi Susanyi and took the second set from the Golden Bear, only to fall in a final 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 decision. #15 senior Scandalis, meanwhile, was up against #21 Ronit Yuroviski of Michigan. Scandalis, too, stole the second set to bring up a third, but wound up with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 loss to also end her singles action in New York.
Junior Olmos would pair back up with her freshman doubles partner Gabby Smith to continue their journey through the consolation bracket. The pair snagged a solid straight-set win yesterday to advance to today's action. There, Olmos/Smith were up against Michigan's Bektas/Najarian, and it was an all-out battle. The Trojans grabbed the first set but stumbled in the second-set tiebreaker. That would force a 10-point tiebreak to decide it all, and another tight battle ensued. In the end, it was the Michigan pair who eked out the victory, posting a 5-7, 7-6 (2), 1-0 (8) decision to wrap Olmos and Smith's doubles competition on the East Coast.
