Women of Troy Advance At ITA National Indoors

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- A busy first day of action at the ITA National Indoor Championships has yielded nice results for USC's contingent of competitors out in New York. Top-seeded defending doubles champs Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria are through to the quarterfinals, while Santamaria and Danielle Lao have both also pushed through to tomorrow's singles Round of 16.
The day began on a winning note for the Women of Troy, as sophomore doubles combo Gabriella DeSimone and Zoë Scandalis scored a win in their Round of 32 opener. USC's #1 Christian/Santamaria and #49 pair of Danielle Lao and Valeria Pulido had both earned byes in the first round. In the Round of 16, DeSimone/Scandalis took a loss to a pair from Tulsa. Top-seeded Christian/Santamaria, meanwhile, served up an 8-4 win over Stanford's Tan/Tsay to scoot into tomorrow's quarterfinals. Lao/Pulido drew a Round of 16 matchup with the No. 2 seeded team from Tennessee, and fell 8-3 to miss a spot in the quarters.
In the singles draw, #8 Sabrina Santamaria blasted her Round of 32 foe from UNC with a 6-0, 7-5 win, which puts the USC sophomore into tomorrow's Round of 16 clash with No. 7 seeded Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama. #7 Zoë Scandalis, seeded No. 3 in the draw, fell in her Round of 32 match with Tennessee's #18 Brynn Boren, to close down her push in the singles main draw. Coming up big with a powerful upset win was USC senior Danielle Lao. the #11 Lao served up a smooth 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 2 seeded Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M, knocking off the #4 ranked Aggie to launch Lao into tomorrow's Round of 16. There, Lao will face a Pac-12 rival in Cal's #22 Anett Schutting.
