Nov. 8, 2009
PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. -- Members of the USC women's tennis team continued their fall competition with a trip to Palm Springs this weekend for action at the 2009 Duels in the Desert. Six Women of Troy geared up for the string of matches, and two Trojans finished out with nothing but singles wins down the stretch. Senior Sarah Fansler and freshman Valeria Pulido both went a perfect 4-0 in their singles competition in the three-day event.
Sarah Fansler faced a set of Texas opponents during her action at the Duels. Fansler opened up with a three-set comeback against Maggi Mello on Friday before tacking up straight-set wins over Caroline Larsson and Amanda Craddock on Saturday. On Sunday, Fansler topped things off with a 7-6 (6), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) win over Sarah Lancaster to round out a winning run in singles play by the senior.
Meanwhile, freshman Valeria Pulido was putting together a similar stretch of success. Pulido drilled Northwestern's Kathryn Turvy 6-1, 6-1 on Friday and then squeezed past Texas' Craddock 7-6 (8), 7-6 (2) first-thing Saturday. A straight-set win over another Texas foe, Krista Damico, finished off Pulido's Saturday before the Trojan freshman took down Larsson 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 on Sunday for a 4-0 run in the desert.
Leyla Entekhabi engaged in three singles matches at the event, and the junior grabbed wins in all three. Straight-set wins by Entekhabi took down Texas' Maya Zein and Carlene Leyden before Entekhabi capped things off with a 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 marathon win over Craddock on Sunday.
Also competing in singles play at the Duels in the Desert were Trojans Cristala Andrews, Lyndsay Kinstler and Alison Ramos. Andrews notched two wins at the event, and Kinstler and Ramos tallied one each.
In doubles play, Andrews and Entekhabi teamed up for a win, while Kinstler/Pulido and Fansler/Ramos each came away with a split on the doubles courts for the weekend. Full results are below:
