Nov. 8, 2007
PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. - The USC women's tennis team saw several successful showings by its freshmen last weekend in Palm Springs, as all four incoming athletes tacked up wins during competition at the Duals in the Desert. Freshman Maria Sanchez cruised through her Flight Three competition with three wins to claim the crown in her flight. Cristala Andrews worked her way into the Flight Four final with a pair of wins before finishing second. Leyla Entekhabi went 1-2 in Flight Two to take fourth place, and Lyndsay Kinstler pulled double duty with matches in both Flight One and Flight Five on her way to a fifth-place finish.
Sanchez also posted a good run in doubles action with senior Lindsey Nelson. Nelson was hampered by an injury, but still the pair was able to grab wins in its first two matches before pulling out of the final in Flight One. The Women of Troy rotated partners in Flight Two, with the Trojan pair of Cristala Andrews / Lyndsay Kinstler tacking up a win.
The 2007 Duals in the Desert featured athletes from seven schools: USC, UCLA, Baylor, Northwestern, Texas, Fresno State and Clemson.
The Women of Troy now break from competition for the remainder of the year before kicking off the dual match season in January 2008.
