USC Doubles Advance In Consolation Play

    Nov. 7, 2008

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - USC's Maria Sanchez fell in a quarterfinal three-setter on Friday at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., but advanced in consolation doubles play alongside teammate Gabriela Niculescu. The Trojan pair will face Miami's Kissell/Vallverdu tomorrow in the consolation semifinals.

After winning her Round of 32 match yesterday, sophomore Maria Sanchez took on Clemson's Josipa Bek this morning in the singles Round of 16. Sanchez dealt out a smooth 6-4, 6-4 win over Bek to move into the afternoon's quarterfinals. There, Sanchez met TCU's Nina Munch-Soegard, going a full three sets before falling 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to round out Sanchez's singles run in Charlottesville.

Also today, Sanchez teamed up with Niculescu in doubles play. The Trojan pair had moved into the consolation bracket yesterday, but got a win in today's consolation quarterfinals with an 8-3 victory over Rales/Yahner of Virginia. Niculescu/Sanchez will play tomorrow in the consolation semis.

Also competing in consolation action today was USC freshman Alison Ramos, who dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to LSU's Megan Falcon in the consolation Round of 16.

While Sanchez, Ramos and Niculescu have been competing in Virginia, two other Women of Troy began play at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore Lyndsay Kinstler and Cristala Andrews took part in singles and doubles play on the first day of action at ASU today. Andrews went 1-1, getting a three-set victory to start the day before falling in the next round. Kinstler was edged in a three-setter in her first match, and took another three-set loss in consolation play later in the day. The pair also fell in their one doubles match, but will continue competition in both singles and doubles play tomorrow.
