CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - USC sophomore Maria Sanchez tacked up a strong singles win today in the opening round of play at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The champion at the ITA West Regionals a week ago, Sanchez secured a place among the top 36 singles players in the nation. Sanchez's first match on Thursday put her up against Auburn-Montgomery's Delia Sescioreanu, and Sanchez pulled out a tight win in the first set before working her way to a final win of 7-6 (5), 7-5 to propel into tomorrow's Round of 16. USC freshman Alison Ramos was up against sixth-seeded Fani Chifchieva of Auburn in her Round of 32 opener, which Chifchieva won in a 7-6 (5), 6-0 decision.
Niculescu and Sanchez earned their place in doubles action as the champions of the ITA West Regionals, but were topped 8-0 in today's doubles Round of 16 by North Carolinas Grabinski/Marand. Niculescu/Sanchez and Ramos will all move into consolation play tomorrow.
