Christian and Santamaria Win Semis, Set Up For Doubles Final

Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria are bound for tomorrow's doubles championship match.

    Nov. 5, 2011

USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria have solidified their place in history already in their young Trojan careers. The sophomore-freshman doubles pair has moved briskly through the competition at the ITA National Indoor Championships and recently served up another upset win, beating the No. 4 seeded team in today's semifinals to move into tomorrow's title match. Christian and Santamaria are the first Trojans ever to reach the doubles final at the ITA Indoors. They are looking to become the first-ever USC doubles team -- male or female -- to win a title at the tournament tomorrow in a match against No. 3 seed Frilling/Mathews of Notre Dame.

Today in the semifinals, Christian and Santamaria had a powerful performance against No. 4 seeded Hamilton/Mushrefova of Northwestern. The Trojan tandem pinned up a 6-2, 6-3 win to ice a spot in tomorrow's championship match, set for 10 a.m. ET at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Post-match quotes from Kaitlyn Christian & Sabrina Santamaria:
    Kaitlyn Christian
    (On the match)
"Today was a great match. They were a very good team and they put a lot of pressure on us from the very get go. But we came out there swinging and we were on fire. We knew we had to get off to a good start, which is what we did."

    (On reaching the finals)
"We're both very excited. We lost at our Regionals and were an [at-large selection] into this tournament; we didn't even think that we were going to make it. It's very exciting to be in the finals. We're having a lot of fun here."

    Sabrina Santamaria
(On her ace and service winner, and Christian's two volley winners, in the final game)
"I was just trying really hard to get my serve in and put some firepower on it so that she could cut across and put the volley away. I knew that if I got my first serve in, she would take care of the rest. She always does."

    (On being in New York)
"This is my first time here. We're actually going to go in the city right now (smiles)."

(On reaching a national championship final as a freshman)
Santamaria: "I never thought this would happen, but she's carrying me. It's all her."
    Christian: "Not in today's match."
