Sabrina Santamaria has her eye on a doubles title with Kaitlyn Christian.

    Nov. 4, 2011

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- USC's young doubles guns Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria made a big statement today out in New York at the ITA National Indoor Championships in upsetting the No. 2 seeds in the doubles draw. The quarterfinal victory by the Women of Troy push the pair into tomorrow's semifinals against the No. 4 seeded team for a shot at another upset and a trip to the title match at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Having cleared a path through UCLA's Anderson/Morton on Thursday, Christian and Santamaria faced Clemson's No. 2 seeded Bek/Wong, who had beaten a Trojan team of Christian and Maria Sanchez last year in the NCAA Doubles semifinals. This time, sophomore Christian and her freshman teammate Santamaria were ready to serve up an upset, taking down Bek/Wong with an 8-6 victory. That puts the Trojans up against No. 4 seeded Hamilton/Mushrefova of Northwestern tomorrow in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, in singles, upset wins were out of reach for Trojans Zoe Scandalis and Danielle Lao, who were up against the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded players, respectively. Both matches presented Pac-12 face-offs, as Scandalis fell 6-3, 6-3 to Cal's NCAA champion Jana Juricova, and Lao lost 6-2, 6-3 to Stanford's NCAA semifinalist Nicole Gibbs. Santamaria also had some singles play on the docket today, playing in an afternoon consolation match and falling 6-4, 6-1 to Kansas State's Petra Niedermayerova.

USC post-match quotes from doubles winners Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria:
    Kaitlyn Christian
    (On the match)
"They are a very good team. We just tried to be aggressive and take over the net. I think that was the key: us rushing the net before they did. And it worked."
(On her experience playing with Santamaria)
"We played doubles together pretty much our whole junior career."

    Sabrina Santamaria
(On playing both singles and doubles at a national event as a freshman)
"It's a huge tournament. I was a little nervous, but those nerves went away as soon as we started playing. I'm lucky to have one of the best doubles players in the country as my partner."
    (On USC's success this week)
Santamaria: "I'm just happy to be representing USC."
Christian: "We're really looking forward to the dual-match season, with four new freshmen already doing really well."
