Women of Troy Advance In ITA National Indoors

Danielle Lao moves into a rematch with Stanford's Nicole Gibbs tomorrow in New York.

    Nov. 3, 2011

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- All four of the USC women's tennis players in action at the ITA National Indoor Championships tacked at least one win on the board today in the opening rounds in at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Danielle Lao and Zoë Scandalis both advanced in the singles realm, while Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria combined forces to move into the doubles quarterfinals tomorrow with two wins today.

Doubles play was the opening action in New York today. The sophomore-freshman combination of Christian and Santamaria was ready to roll early, netting an 8-4 win over Cartwright/Leitz out of Tyler Junior College. That set up the Trojan tandem for a rematch with UCLA's Anderson/Morton. That Bruin duo had beaten Christian/Santamaria just 10 days earlier in the championship match at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, but today the Trojans were ready, serving up an 8-5 win over the UCLA pair to advance to tomorrow's doubles quarterfinals. There, Christian/Santamaria will face No. 2 seeded Bek/Wong of Clemson. That team is familiar to Christian, who faced them last season when she and teammate Maria Sanchez fell to the two Tigers in the 2011 NCAA doubles semifinals.

On the singles side of the coin, Zoë Scandalis was the first Trojan on court, and the freshman scooped up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling in her opener to advance to tomorrow's Round of 16. She has a familiar foe on the agenda there as well, facing top-seeded Jana Juricova of Cal, whom Scandalis took to three tough sets during the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships last month. Junior Danielle Lao also earned herself a heated rematch for the Round of 16. Lao rolled past Columbia's Bianca Sanon 6-3, 6-2 in this evening's Round of 32, and will take on Stanford's No. 2 seeded Nicole Gibbs tomorrow in the Round of 16. Gibbs and Lao last clashed in the NCAA singles Round of 32 last season. Finally, in an end to a busy day for Sabrina Santamaria, the freshman fell 7-6 (1), 6-0 in her evening singles match to SMU's Marta Lesniak, leaving Santamaria to focus on doubles play with Christian tomorrow.
