Niculescu Wins Out At Duals In the Desert|
Nov. 3, 2008
PALM SPRINGS, CALIF. - USC junior Gabriela Niculescu pounded out three powerful singles wins and tallied a pair of doubles victories alongside sophomore Lyndsay Kinstler to help lead the USC women's tennis team in action at the Duals in the Desert over the weekend. Held at Moore Tennis Academy, the tournament offers multiple flights of eight-player brackets for competition among several top tennis squads. The Trojans sent six players to the weekend's Duals and had three doubles teams entered into the competition in Palm Springs.
Niculescu tacked up a 6-0, 6-3 win to open things in the desert before shutting out her next opponent in a smooth 6-0, 6-0 decision to move into the flight final. There, she continued her straight-set stretch with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Baylor's Jelena Stanivuik. USC sophomore Leyla Entekhabi also had a winning effort in her Flight Four singles bracket, going 2-1 down the stretch. Entekhabi took down her first two opponents before falling in the final.
In doubles, Niculescu and Kinstler teamed up for two decisive wins before being edged out by Borsanyi/Siwosz of Baylor in that final match.
