Fink/Niculescu Fall, Head To Consolation Play|
Nov. 1, 2007
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The USC men's doubles team of Robert Farah and Kaes Van't Hof opened up competition at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships in Columbus, Ohio, by dispatching the tournament's No. 3 seed to move into tomorrow's quarterfinals. Farah/Van't Hof - who qualified by claiming the ITA West Regional doubles title - extended their winning streak to six straight with their 8-6 upset win of Texas team Christian Rojmar/Bojan Szumanski. The Trojans now set up to face Denver's Adam Holmstrom/Nik Persson on Friday in the quarterfinals.
That Denver pair was responsible for the Trojans' last loss, in fact, as Holmstrom/Persson topped Farah/Van't Hof 8-4 in the consolation final of the ITA All-American.
Farah did double duty on day one in Columbus, as the ITA All-American singles finalist also participated in singles action on Thursday. The third seed in singles play, Farah faced Ryan Rowe of Illinois in the opening Round of 32 and tried to push for a third set before coming up short in a second-set tiebreaker to fall 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Farah now turns to consolation play, where he will face Daescu of Oklahoma tomorrow in the consolation Round of 16.
Also competing at the prestigious National Indoors was USC women's doubles pair Amanda Fink/Gabriela Niculescu. The ITA West Regional champions clashed with Baylor's Lenka Broosova/Zuzana Zemenova in their Round of 16 matchup, but the Women of Troy fell 8-6 to the Baylor duo to snap a five-match win streak held by the Trojan pair.
Fink/Niculescu move into consolation action tomorrow. The Women of Troy will square off against Duke's Mang/Granson in the quarterfinals of consolation play.
