Oct. 31, 2011
PALOS VERDES, CALIF. -- Two Women of Troy saw singles action over the weekend at the first Jack Kramer Invitational, played at the Jack Kramer Club in Palos Verdes. The tournament brought in collegiate players from around the country, with USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Valeria Pulido entering the mix for singles play.
Ranked #60 in the nation in singles, sophomore Kaitlyn Christian was the No. 3 seed in the draw and beat her first two opponents before crossing over with No. 2 seeded Pamela Montez of UCLA in the semifinals. Christian had taken down a Bruin already in the the quarterfinals with a straight-set win over #102 Carling Seguso, but #45-ranked Montez was a tougher foe. The match went to a deciding 10-point tiebreak, with Montez pulling out the win with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) decision to stop Christian's run in the semifinals.
Junior Valeria Pulido saw her first collegiate action of the year after having played for Mexico in the Pan American Games. Pulido crossed paths with Pepperdine's Khunpak Issara in the Round of 16 after a bye in the first round, and fell 6-2, 6-4 to Issara. Complete USC results at the tourney are below.
