    Oct. 27, 2003

SAN DIEGO - The ITA Women's Tennis Western Regional Championships being conducted at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego have been cancelled due to the rapidly spreading wildfires raging throughout Southern California.

The championships, which were being co-hosted by San Diego State and San Diego, were originally scheduled to have the singles and doubles semifinal rounds played on Sunday and the championship matches on Monday.

Instead the tournament's final day was Saturday, with Jackie Carlton of UCLA, Carine Vermeulen of USC, Diane Hollands of Arizona and Luana Magnani of USC advancing to the singles semifianl round. In doubles, the 32-team field was paired to eight before the championships were cancelled.

Tournament officials contacted the ITA to determine who would advance to the national tournament. The ITA decided that the two highest remaining seeds in singles and the highest remaining seed in doubles would advance. That means that top-seeded Carlton and second-seeded Magnani advance in singles while the top-seeded doubles team of Carlton and Fisher will also move on.
