It's An ITA Regional Title Sweep For Women of Troy!

Zoë Scandalis has added an ITA Southwest Regional Singles Championship to her resume.
    Oct. 20, 2014

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- USC women's tennis has posted its second title sweep in five years with today's winning effort at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. A hometown hero, senior Zoë Scandalis emerged as the singles champion -- USC's third regional singles title in five seasons -- and the doubles duo of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith also captured USC's third doubles crown in a five-year span at the tourney. USC last swept the event in 2010 when Danielle Lao won the singles title and Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos claimed the doubles title.

The junior-freshman combo pack of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith were playing together for the first time this season, and the journey to the doubles title match marked a first for Olmos -- who won a Pac-12 doubles title with graduated Kaitlin Christian last season. The fresh pairing of Olmos and Smith proved potent. After having to knock off their own teammates in yesterday's semifinals, the No. 4 seeded Olmos/Smith went up again the draw's No. 5 seeds from Pepperdine today in the title match. It was a tough battle, extending to tiebreakers, but the Trojans were up to the test. Olmos/Smith pulled off the 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) decision over Waves Guillermo/Runglerdkriangrai to haul in the championship trophy. It was USC's fifth straight soiree into the doubles title match at the ITA Regional, and marked the Trojans' third such crown in that span.

The singles championship bout was scheduled to get underway following the doubles final, pitting top-seeded Trojan senior Zoë Scandalis -- ranked #15 in the nation -- against Pepperdine's No. 2 seeded and #20 ranked Lorraine Guillermo. Guillermo had been playing sick during the doubles final, however, and opted to bow out of the singles title match. That put a well-deserved singles championship trophy in the hands of Scandalis, who hadn't surrendered a single set during her run to the title match. It was Scandalis' second time reaching the singles final, having done so as a freshman in 2011. Classmate Sabrina Santamaria won it all that year, following Danielle Lao's victory in 2010 when USC last swept the event. Scandalis now becomes the third Trojan in five years to win it all at the ITA Regionals.
