SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Of the USC women's tennis team's five ranked singles players, four pushed their way into the Round of 32 on Friday at the ITA West Regionals in San Diego, Calif. In the Round of 16 later that day, it was freshman Sarah Fansler who managed to power through to the quarterfinal round with a 7-5, 6-1 win over San Diego State's Eliska Krauzova. She will face UCLA's No. 4 seed Riza Zalameda in Saturday's quarterfinals at noon. Three USC doubles teams have moved into the Round of 16 with Friday wins.
No. 12 seed Sarah Fansler rode the momentum of Thursday's 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the Second Round and tacked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over UCLA's 6-4, 6-3. With that Bruin opponent cleared out of the way, Fansler met San Diego State's Eliska Krausova in the Round of 16, setting up her 7-5, 6-1 win that pushes her on as the lone Trojan in the singles quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Amanda Fink got the day started with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over UC Irvine's Becky Bernhard. That win meant a matchup with UCLA's Ashley Joelson in the Round of 16, where she forced a deciding third set but fell 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Senior and No. 3 seed Dianne Matias toppled San Diego State's Alesya Vidov 6-0, 6-3 in her Round of 32 match to come up against UCLA's No. 13 seed Yasmin Schnack in the next round. Hers was another three-set marathon. After battling to force and win a first-set tiebreaker, Matias ended up losing the match 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4.
No. 18-seeded senior Julie Smekodub dished out an upset of No. 10 seed Pavla Mestervoa with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win to start the day, pushing on to face UCLA's Riza Zalameda in the afternoon's Round of 16. Zalameda got by Smekodub with a 6-1, 6-4 to avoid an all-USC quarterfinal.
The only Trojan to slip in the day's Round of 32 was senior Anca Anastasiu, seeded at No. 11. Anastasiu was tripped up by Holly Bagshaw on Friday morning.
In doubles play, USC made it a clean sweep into the Round of 16. Although she dropped her singles match, Anastasiu buckled down with fellow senior Smekodub by her side on the doubles courts. Anastasiu/Smekodub beat UC Santa Barbara's Bjornstrom/Hausman 8-4 to earn a place in Saturday's Round of 16 against top-seeded UCLA duo Zalameda/McGoodwin. Fifth-seeded DeVera/Fink knocked off Arizona's Razloznik/Katz 8-2 and will face Williams/Bengson of Long Beach State on Saturday morning. And USC's No. 8 seed Fansler/Matias also forced their way through the Round of 32 with an 8-6 victory over UNLV's Templefelde/Constanti to set up a Round of 16 match against Arizona's Steinberg/Topozowski.
In consolation action, freshman Katja Decker-Sadowski posted a pair of wins to advance . She will face Baker in Saturday's Round of 16. Sophomore Ashley Ellis lost her Round of 64 match in the consolation bracket.
