Oct. 19, 2006
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- The next round of ITA West Regional action awaits six USC women's tennis players after the first day of action in San Diego, Calif. Five Women of Troy are seeded in the tournament, led by top seed Amanda Fink, who - along with five of her teammates - won their second-round matches on Thursday. Fink, No. 3 seed Dianne Matias, No. 11 seed Anca Anastasiu, No. 12 seed Sarah Fansler, No. 18 seed Julie Smekodub and unseeded Judy DeVera will all move on to Friday's third round with their respective Thursday victories.
The five seeded Trojans and sophomore Ashley Ellis all earned a bye in the first round of play. DeVera and freshman Katja Decker-Sadowski both had first-round matches to play, however, and both were able to topple their opening opponents. Decker-Sadowski knocked out Hawaii's Kana Aikawa 6-3, 6-4 to move on. She then came up against San Diego State's Eliska Krausova in the second round, where Decker-Sadowski slipped 6-2, 6-4. DeVera, meanwhile, fought through a lengthy first-round match against UC Santa Barbara's Carina Bjornstrom to post a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-2 victory that put her in the next round against S. Maharah-Walkup of Hawaii. DeVera made short work of that opponent, tacking up a 6-3, 6-2 win to earn a spot in the next day's competition, where she will meet Pepperdine's Biana Dulgheru at 10 a.m.
After her first-round bye, Ellis squared off with Arizona's Danielle Steinberg, who ended Ellis' second-round hopes with a 6-2, 6-3 decision. The tournament's top seed, Fink, battled Pepperdine's Tania Rice in the second round and posted a decisive 6-1, 6-1 score. Fink will face UC Irvine's Becky Bernhard on Friday morning in the third round. Senior Matias was making similarly quick work of UCLA's Becky Duesler to the tune of a 6-1, 6-3 win that will put Matias up against Alesya Vidov of San Diego State on Friday. Senior Anastasiu tallied another win to her career record with a 6-4, 6-3 win over UCLA's Anna Victoria Lind after a first-round bye. Anastasiu will face Holly Bagshaw on Friday morning.
Two USC newcomers also pumped their ways through to the Friday action with second-round wins. Freshman Sarah Fansler absolutely shut down her opponent, H.R. Espiritu of UC Riverside for a 6-0, 6-0 blowout that puts Fansler versus UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin in the next round. Senior transfer Julie Smekodub also pushed through, tacking up a 6-4, 6-1 win over Cal State Northridge's Sonya Kumar on Thursday afternoon. Smekodub will face LMU's Pavla Mesterova on Friday.
Also on Friday, the Women of Troy begin their doubles runs at the ITA West Regional. Ellis and Decker-Sadowski actually got their doubles action underway on Thursday with an opening match against Arizona's Steinberg/Topozowski and held strong for a 9-7 win that pushed them into the Round of 32 against SDSU's Kitts/Vidov. Friday morning means doubles action for six more Trojans as well. Anastasiu/Smekodub will play UCSB's Bjornstrom/Hausman; DeVera/Fink team up to play Arizona's Razlioznik/Katz; and Fansler/Matias pair up for their match with UC Irvine's Bernhard/ Agababian. DeVera/Fink have earned the No. 5 seed, and Fansler/Matias are seeded No. 8.
