Oct. 17, 2003
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In an exhibition fall match, the USC women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Notre Dame at Eck Tennis Pavilion in South Bend, Ind., on Friday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Women of Troy enjoyed some good performances by the newcomers and returning players.
The Fighting Irish took the doubles point and salvaged a split of the singles matches to earn the win. The match featured nine singles matches, but only the top six counted for team singles points, in addition to the doubles point.
Making the jump from No. 6 to No. 2 this season, sophomore Carine Vermeulen easily defeated Notre Dame's Catrina Thompson, 6-2, 6-2. Freshmen Dianne Matias and Judy DeVera also started the year off with wins as Matias defeated Lauren Connelly, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, and DeVera beat Kristina Stastny, 6-0, 7-5, at the third and fourth spots, respectively.
In doubles play, Vermeulen and partner Luana Magnani accounted for a win at the top spot. The new tandem beat sisters Catrina and Christian Thompson, 8-5.
Unfortunately, the Irish claimed victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles for the first point, then earned wins at Nos. 1, 5 and 6 singles to take the match.
The Women of Troy's next preseason outing will be at the Omni Hotels Western Region Individual Championship to be held Oct. 24-27 in San Diego.
