    Oct. 16, 2014

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- All six USC women's tennis players had a winning first day of action at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships. The Women of Troy registered a singles sweep of the Round of 64 to punch six tickets to tomorrow's Round of 32. Doubles play, meanwhile, is set to open up tomorrow for that USC contingent thanks to first-round byes for all three Trojan teams in the draw at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

The Women of Troy were split down the middle when it came to match lengths today. Gabriella DeSimone, Zoë Katz and Zoë Scandalis all whipped up straight-set victories in their singles successes. Meanwhile, Giuliana Olmos, Gabby Smith and Meredith Xepoleas each battled through three sets to register their respective singles wins today. Regardless of the duration, all six are officially through to tomorrow's Round of 32. All six are seeded in the singles draw, led by top seed Scandalis. Scandalis notched a smooth 6-0, 6-3 win over Rebecca Faltusz of Hawai'i today. Next in line, No. 4 seed Olmos took it down to the wire against Grand Canyon's Tatum Prudhomme, wrapping up the win in a third-set tiebreaker for a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2) nail biter that gets the junior on through to the next round.

No. 7 seed Katz was all business in her Round of 64 matchup against Cal State Fullerton's Emilia Burkowski, netting a 6-2, 6-1 finish there. Senior DeSimone checks in as the No. 9 seed, and left no prisoners in her swift 6-0, 6-1 win over San Diego State's Hailey Johnson.

USC freshmen Smith and Xepoleas also are on the list as seeded players and both proved their grit today with three-set victories. No. 10 seed Smith came back to beat Long Beach State's Karolina Rozenberg 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, and No. 11 seed Xepoleas topped UC Santa Barbara's Natalie Da Silveira in three 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. The Round of 32 now awaits all six Trojans tomorrow morning, with 9:30 a.m. matches on tap down the line.

The day will begin, however, with doubles play, as all three Trojan pairings skipped through to tomorrow's Round of 32 after first-round byes. The three new duos for USC include No. 2 seeded Katz/Scandalis, No. 4 seed Olmos/Smith (USC) and unseeded DeSimone/Xepoleas.
