Women of Troy Wrap Up ITA All-American|
Oct. 10, 2009
The USC women's tennis team has finished up its stretch of competition at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships after Danielle Lao's impressive run through prequalifying and qualifying and into the main draw and a consolation singles push by Alison Ramos.
Lao scored a first-round 7-6 (4), 6-2 win in the ITA main draw on opening day at the Riviera Country Club for her seventh straight win as a Trojan. In the second round, however, Lao was knocked out in a tough three-setter, falling 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey.
Meanwhile, early main draw losses pushed Alison Ramos and Maria Sanchez into consolation play at the Riviera/ITA competition. Sanchez had another tough matchup in her way in Miami's Laura Vallverdu, and Vallverdu managed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sanchez in consolation play. Ramos tacked up two consolation wins to move into today's semifinals, where the USC sophomore was knocked out by Fresno State's Anastasia Petukova. Ramos had taken out Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota 7-6 (5), 6-2 to start things off in consolation play, and then dropped Northwestern's Maria Mosolova in a smooth 6-3, 6-3 win to get into the semis.
