USC Women Fight Hard In Riviera Round of 16

Zoë Scandalis put defending NCAA champ Jana Juricova on the ropes today in the Round of 16.

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- Women of Troy Danielle Lao and Zoë Scandalis both put up a powerful fight today in the Round of 16 at the ITA/Riviera Women's All-American Championships. Up against tough opponents in their respective singles matches, the Trojans both battled through three sets before falling out of the All-American action.

USC freshman Zoë Scandalis made a resounding statement with her gutsy performance against the No. 1 seed and defending NCAA singles champ Jana Juricova. Riding a wave of seven straight singles wins, Scandalis showed no fear against the Cal senior, who was a runner-up at last year's ITA All-American. Scandalis pushed Juricova to the limit, forcing a third-set tiebreaker and taking a 4-0 lead in that tiebreak until Juricova managed to fire back and eventually break through the stubborn Trojan newcomer for a 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (6) win.

USC junior Danielle Lao, meanwhile, was up against a relatively unknown opponent in Duke freshman Beatrice Capra for her Round of 16 clash. Capra had beaten Stanford's 2011 NCAA singles semifinalist Nicole Gibbs in the Round of 32 the previous day, and was tough once more as she pushed through a three-setter with Lao to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

In doubles play, USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria stumbled after four straight wins together, falling 8-5 to Florida's Oyen/Will this morning in the Round of 16.

The Trojans' next competition comes with the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, to be played in San Diego later this month.
