Oct. 6, 2003
LOS ANGELES - Women's tennis freshman Dianne Matias made a good impression in her first outing with the Women of Troy, falling just one match short of advancing to the qualifying round of the Riviera/ITA All-America Championships. The tournament prequalifier was held last week at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Matias defeated Tulsa's Ilona Somers, 6-4, 6-2, in the first round and Purdue's Gretchen Haynor, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round. She missed the cut thanks to a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Vanderbilt's Audra Falk in the final match.
Matias also captured a win in the doubles prequalifier. She and partner Melissa Esmero defeated Natalie Frazier and Evgenia Subbotina of Georgia in the first round, 8-6, but were eliminated by Somers and Daniela Muscolino of Tulsa, 8-2.
Four singles players and four doubles teams from the prequalifier advanced to the qualifier, which will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 7-8.
