Two Trojans Move On In Riviera/ITA All-American Tennis Championships|
Oct. 5, 2006
PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- USC junior Lindsey Nelson and senior Dianne Matias each tacked up main draw singles victories at the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championships. Although the pair fell in their Round of 16 doubles match, the Trojans each had plenty of energy left to power through their singles matches, moving on to Friday's Round of 16.
As a doubles team, Nelson and Matias posted three wins in the qualifying draw to earn their place in Thursday's main draw. There, Nelson/Matias faced Notre Dame's powerful pair of Catrina Thompson/Christian Thompson, and the Women of Troy fell just short, 8-6.
Nelson and Matias then joined Trojans teammate Amanda Fink in the main draw of singles competition. Fink lost her opening match 7-6 (4), 6-2 to North Carolina's Katrina Tsang, while Nelson dropped here Colorado opponent, Monica Milewski, with a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory. Matias' first-round match was a little tricker, but the senior worked her way to a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Georgia's Natalie Frazier.
On Friday in the Round of 16, Nelson will face Miami's Laura Vallverdu, and Matias will play Wisconsin's Caitlin Burke for the right to move on to the quarterfinals later that day.
