Olmos & Scandalis Secure A Spot In ITA/Riviera All-American Doubles Semifinals|
Oct. 3, 2014
PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- USC's dynamic doubles duo of Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis served up another straight-set victory in their doubles campaign at the ITA/Riviera Women's All-American Championships today in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Finalists in last year's tournament, the two Trojans are bound and determined to get back to the title match. Today's strong win in the quarterfinals was another big step toward bettering that finish from last season. Olmos/Scandalis are now all set for a semifinal bout tomorrow at Riviera Tennis Club.
Singles play was first on the docket today, however, and Scandalis was up against a tough customer in UNC's Hayley Carter -- ranked #3 in the nation -- for today's Round of 16. The #15 Scandalis was able to take the first set, but Carter regrouped and managed to register a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over her Trojan opponent, wrapping Scandalis' singles run at the ITA All-American.
Her doubles slate was still quite full, though. Standing as the draw's No. 6 seeded team with parter Olmos, Scandalis moved into doubles play later in the day. There, Olmos/Scandalis was up against #14 Lee/Yurovsky of Michigan in the quarterfinals. Once again, #7 Olmos/Scandalis proved overpowering. Hungry to get back to the title match for the second straight year, the Trojan duo tipped over Michigan's #14 Lee/Yurovsky with a 6-2, 7-5 victory that plunks the two Women of Troy into tomorrow's semifinals. They'll face either Davidson/Zhao of Stanford or Oklahoma State's Laurente/Lushkova.
