USC's Olmos & Scandalis Advance To ITA/Riviera All-American Quarters|
Oct. 3, 2013
PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- USC women's tennis doubles duo Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis were the giant killers of the day out at the ITA/Riviera Women's All-American Championships today at Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The Trojan tandem dispatched a top-20 team to start the day and then took down the No. 3 seeds this afternoon to move into tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Ranked #54 in the nation, Olmos and Scandalis found their groove today, opening up action in the doubles main draw with a solid 8-3 upset of #16 Macfarlane/Routliffe of Alabama. That put the two Trojans up against the No. 3 seeds, #4 Brhane/Ritchie of Oklahoma in the afternoon's Round of 16. There, Olmos/Scandalis pulled off an 8-4 upset to launch themselves into tomorrow's quarterfinals at 9 a.m.
Trojan teammates Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz were also in an upset-minded mode today in their half of the doubles draw. The #19 ranked pair of USC newcomers combined forces for an impressive 8-6 upset of #11 Chi/Schutting of Cal in the morning's first round. In the Round of 16, though, the upset run came up just short when William & Mary's No. 6 seeded Belaya/Loomans topped the Trojans 8-4.
