WESTWOOD, CALIF. -- Three Women of Troy were in action this weekend, grabbing wins in two different tournaments. Freshman Zoe Scandalis secured a spot at the upcoming Oct. 4-5 ITA/Riviera All-American Championship qualifying rounds with a stretch of singles wins in Westwood. Her fellow freshman Sabrina Santamaria went 2-1 in the prequaliyfing competition, and Scandalis and Gabriella DeSimone also paired up in doubles play. Meanwhile, USC senior Alison Ramos worked her way into the consolation semifinals at the competitive Cal Nike Invitational up in Berkeley.
In ITA/Riviera All-American prequalifying, Scandalis pushed through an impressive three-set win in the first round to move into the second round, where she dominated her Memphis opponent with a straight-set win. In the final round today, Scandalis put up another powerful fight, and edged out Virginia's Li Xi with a strong tiebreaker in the third for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1) win that punched her ticket into the qualifying rounds.
Santamaria opened her prequalifying competition with a straight-set win before battling through a comeback win in a three-setter in the second round. In the final round, however, she took a loss to Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt. Scandalis and Zoe DeSimone proved to be a strong doubles pair, too. The duo pinned up solid wins in its first two matches before falling in a tight 8-6 match to Clayton/Mar of Duke.
While the freshmen were doing battle in Westwood, senior Alison Ramos was grabbing some great wins in Berkeley as the Cal Nike Invitational. Playing in the competitive ITA Gold Singles bracket, Ramos fell to the draw's No. 8 seed in the first round to move into the consolation bracket. There, Ramos pushed through tough opponents from St. Mary's and Santa Clara to move into the semifinals. She would get stuck with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Pacific's Iveta Masarova in the consolation semis to wrap up her trip.
