Women of Troy Dominate Doubles Qualifying To Score Main Draw Spots
Oct. 2, 2013
PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- The USC women's tennis team will have representation in both singles and doubles when main draw action gets underway at the ITA/Riviera Women's All-American Championships tomorrow in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Two Trojan doubles duos enjoyed big success during the qualifying rounds this week, each snagging three key wins to advance into main draw play, which runs Oct. 3-6. While Zoë Scandalis holds down a place in the singles main draw, she'll also team up in doubles with Giuliana Olmos after the pair's winning run through qualifying. USC's senior-freshman combo of Trojan newcomers Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz also tacked up three wins in qualifying to move on.
Boren and Katz entered qualifying as the No. 2 seed in the draw. After eking out a tiebreak win in the first round, #19 Boren/Katz found a groove and win 8-1 in their next match before dispatching No. 8 seeded Albuquerque/Riobueno of Miami 8-4 in today's crucial third round. USC's #54 pair of Olmos and Scandalis, meanwhile, stayed in stride throughout en route to upsetting No. 5 seeded Grgan/Tere-Apisah of Georgia State 8-5 today to score their advancement to the main draw.
Boren/Katz will face Cal's #11 Chi/Schutting tomorrow in the main draw Round of 32, while Olmos/Scandalis line up against Alabama's #16 Macfarlane/Routliffe. Scandalis will wrap her day with singles play, as the #17 junior opens up her singles push against Texas A&M qualifier #48 Cristina Stancu.
Defending ITA/Riviera All-American doubles champions Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria are sidelined for this year's tourney as Santamaria nurses an injury. She will not be competing in singles, either, but is expected to return to competition later this month.
