Ellie Yates had a great first weekend of action to start her sophomore season at USC.

    Sept. 29, 2013

Members of the USC women's tennis team were sprinkled around California this weekend for action at season-opening competitions. The first tournaments of the 2013-14 tennis season saw four Women of Troy competing at the Cal Nike Invitational in Berkeley, while two other Women of Troy opened up the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships with prequalifying rounds held in Westwood.

Out at the Cal Nike Invitational, senior Brynn Boren and freshman Zoë Katz played their first matches as Trojans. The two newcomers both got winning starts to their USC careers, picking up two wins apiece to reached the quarterfinals of their respective draws. #19 Boren beat #90 Megan Heneghan of UC Davis and BYU's Megan Sheehan-Dizon in the first two rounds before falling to Cal's #44 Lynn Chi in the quarters of the ITA Blue Singles draw. Meanwhile, Katz topped Fresno State's Anne Susdorf and Sacramento State's Olivia Boija before a loss to Marlen Hacke of Arizona in the quarterfinals of the ITA Gold Singles bracket. Sophomore Ellie Yates and junior Gabriella DeSimone were both grouped into the ITA Blue draw, with Yates defeating Layla Sanders of UC Davis in her first-round match. She'd fall in a hard-fought match against #23 Klara Fabikova in the next round, but only after making some serious noise in taking the ranked Cal player down to the wire with a third-set tiebreaker that Fabikova pulled out with a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (6) decision. #56 DeSimone would take a loss in the first round to San Francisco's #57 Andrea Ka before going 1-1 in the consolation bracket.

That Trojan foursome also took in some doubles play in Berkeley, pairing up for two appearances in the quarterfinals. Katz and Yates teamed up for a Round of 16 win before falling to the #11-ranked top seeds from Cal in the quarters. Boren and DeSimone also moved into the quarterfinals on a Round of 16 victory, but were edged out in a tiebreaker by a Santa Clara duo.

Meanwhile, back in Southern California, USC's Kaitlyn Christian and Giuliana Olmos were looking for tickets to the coming ITA/Riveria All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades. To get there, the two Trojans would need to grab three wins in the prequalifying draws. Both Christian and Olmos would win their first matches, but took a loss in the second round of singles play. The duo paired up in doubles as well, but fell to a team from Harvard in the first round.

Next up for the Women of Troy is qualifying and main draw competition at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships, running Oct. 1-6 at Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades. Ranked No. 1 in the land, Christian and Sabrina Santamaria are set to kick off their season's action in the main draw (Oct. 3-6). Santamaria also stands as the nation's No. 1 singles player as she opens up her junior campaign. She's locked in with a spot in the ITA/Riviera All-American singles main draw, with teammates No. 19 Brynn Borenand No. 17 Zoë Scandalis listed as alternates for the main draw. Scandalis reached the 2012 ITA/Riviera All-American singles semifinals last year as a sophomore. Boren is also paired up with freshman Zoë Katz for doubles competition, also on the list as an alternate for the doubles main draw.

Boren and Scandalis have a place in the qualifying singles draw, which runs Oct. 1-2. Teammate Gabriella DeSimone, ranked No. 56 in the nation in singles, also will compete in singles qualifying. In the doubles draw, Boren and Katz will play in qualifying if they don't end up netting a place as alternates in the main draw.
