Olmos & Smith Drum Up Their First Title Of The Season|
Sept. 20, 2015
USC’s intrepid doubles duo of senior Giuliana Olmos and sophomore Gabby Smith could do no wrong at the first edition of the Oracle/ITA Masters this week. The wildcard pair served up a string of decisive victories en route to capturing the doubles championship today with a smooth 6-2, 6-2 win in the title match at the Malibu Racquet Club.
In yesterday’s semifinal bout, Olmos and Smith coolly dispatched the draw’s No. 2 seeds, #4 ranked Campbell/Colton of Vanderbilt with a 6-2, 6-3 decision. Today in the title match, Olmos/Smith did it one game better in taking down another top-10 team. Up against Kentucky’s #9 Adachi/Sutjiadi, the Women of Troy showed no fear once again. The USC duo whipped up a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Kentucky pair to claim the Oracle/ITA Masters doubles championships in their first weekend of action for the 2015-16 season.
Meanwhile, up in San Francisco, USC’s #36 sophomore Madison Westby was engaged in some singles and doubles action at the Battle in the Bay. Teammates Meredith Xepoleas and Alex Letzt withdrew from competition due to illness, leaving Westby as the lone soldier at the event. She’d get out of the gates on a winning note, topping Pacific’s Cristina Saenz De Buruaga 7-6, (7), 6-2 in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, though, Westby was upended by San Jose State’s Marie Klocker 6-4, 6-0 to wrap the Trojan’s run in the singles realm. Without any Trojan teammates in action, Westby would pair with San Francisco’s Shanna Dos Santos for doubles play, and the Spartan-Trojan pairing would fall in their quarterfinal bout in doubles play.
