    USC Women Silence Syracuse

Top-ranked doubles pair Christian/Santamaria kicked off 2012 fall action with a solid win.

    Sept. 14, 2012

The USC women's tennis team had a successful early-season tuneup on the other side of the country last week, as the Women of Troy shut out host Syracuse on Sept. 9 in Randall's Island, N.Y. The teams played a dual-match format, but the results were only counted for individuals, with USC cleaning house with a sweep of three doubles wins followed by six singles victories.

With fresh preseason rankings newly tucked under their belts, the Women of Troy were up to the task in their first action of 2012-13. The top-ranked doubles team in the land, Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria, delivered an 8-3 win to kick off USC's campaign. Senior-sophomore combo Danielle Lao and Zoë Scandalis combined forces for an 8-4 win, while another senior-soph tandem, Valeria Pulido and Gabriella DeSimone, matched that score to help USC wrap up a clean sweep in its 2012-13 doubles debut.

In singles, it was wins down the line for the Women of Troy. Syracuse went down in straight sets in all but one match, as #11 Danielle Lao, Kaitlyn Christian, #7 Zoé Scandalis, #8 Sabrina Santamaria and Gabriella DeSimone made short work of their Orange opponents. Valeria Pulido hit a bump in the road in the second set, but regrouped and held strong in the 10-point tiebreaker to claim a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) win that gets the whole USC roster off to a winning start to the season.
