Trojans Roll On to NCAA Singles And Doubles Rounds Of 16

    May 25, 2006

All of USC's NCAA participants grabbed wins on Thursday to earn trips to the Round of 16 for the NCAA Singles and Doubles championships. Freshman Amanda Fink and sophomore Lindsey Nelson posted their second wins of the NCAA Singles competition. Nelson then teamed up with Luana Magnani for a doubles upset of Notre Dame's third-seeded pair, while USC's team of Dianne Matias and Carine Vermeulen did similar work with an upset doubles win to move into Friday's Round of 16 at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center.

USC singles standouts Fink and Nelson were the first to slice their ways into the next round of the NCAA Singles Championships with Round of 32 wins. Both will face Top-10 opponents on Friday.

No. 18-ranked Nelson squared off against Texas-Arlington's #100 Klara Jagasova and outlasted her opponent through a three-set battle. Nelson picked up the opening set, slipped in the second, and then pumped out a strong third set to move into the Round of 16 with her 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

Nelson now faces a rematch with her No. 1 singles foe from the NCAA Team Semifinal against Miami. Nelson and #2 Audra Cohen were locked in a three-set match, with Cohen leading 3-2 in the third when the match was suspended with Miami's 4-1 victory. Top-seeded Cohen beat Stanford's Whitney Deason 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to work her way back into a matchup with Nelson. This will be Nelson's second straight appearance in the NCAA Round of 16.

While Nelson was pinning up her Round of 32 victory, No. 7-ranked Fink was setting up for her fourth faceoff of the season against UCLA's #46 Tracy Lin. Fink had beaten Lin twice already, losing once during the Freeman Memorial in the fall. In their Round of 32 battle, Fink came back to win the first set, and then did the same in the second to post a 6-4, 6-3 victory and roll on to the NCAA Round of 16.

There, Fink will face Stanford's #10 Teresa Logar, who beat TCU's Helena Besovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in their Round of 32 match. Today's win puts Fink at an even 40 singles victories this season, as the No. 7 ranked ITA Rookie Player of the Year is now 40-11 overall entering the NCAA Singles Round of 16.

Nelson did double duty on the day, teaming up with Luana Magnani as the nation's #18-ranked doubles team for the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships. Magnani/Nelson faced No. 3 seed Catrina Thompson/Christian Thompson from Notre Dame, and gutted out three grueling sets. After USC grabbed a relatively quick win in the first set, the teams locked into a second-set tiebreaker that the Notre Dame duo won to pull even. The final set was almost a repeat situation, but the Women of Troy stubbornly stole the victory for a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2) win. That victory catapults Magnani/Nelson into the doubles Round of 16.

#28 Dianne Matias / Carine Vermeulen also got in on the NCAA Doubles action, going up against Clemson's Carol Salge/Federica van Adrichem in an evening match. Matias and Vermeulen were all business, toppling their #19 opponents 6-1, 6-4 to punch their tickets to the next round.
