Christian/Santamaria Fight On To NCAA Doubles Round of 16|
May 23, 2013
URBANA, ILL. -- A year wiser and a year more successful, USC's No. 2 seeded doubles pair of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria were bound and determined to escape the surprise first-round exit they suffered last season at the NCAA Doubles Championships. Just last week, the Trojan pair had taken their first loss since that 2012 defeat, but today in the 2013 NCAA Doubles Round of 32, Christian/Santamaria got back to the business of winning.
The duo left their Northwestern opponents Abu Mushrefova/Hamilton in the dust with a 6-1, 6-1 win that pushes Christian/Santamaria into tomorrow's Round of 16. The Women of Troy will square off against Oklahoma State's Narattana/Rose in an effort to kickstart another winning streak as they take a 33-1 season record into tomorrow's match.
Santamaria's day began on the singles courts, where she had also spent a long evening yesterday waiting out the rain in order to play her first round of singles competition. Today, Santamaria had a 10:30 a.m. CT match scheduled for her Round of 32 clash with Alexa Guaracha of Alabama. Guaracha had the hotter hand today, however, as she cleared Santamaria's plate to focus on doubles play with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over the USC sophomore. That wrapped up No. 2 seeded Santamaria's singles season as a 31-5 overall record, locking her as the team leader in singles wins on the season.
Zoë Scandalis also was in action today for the singles Round of 32, going up against No. 6 seeded Lauren Herring of Georgia. Herring put-up a tough fight against the USC sophomore and handed Scandalis a 6-4, 6-2 loss that puts her at a 21-9 overall singles record for the season.
