Four-Time All-American Jewel Peterson Ends Career At USC

    May 23, 2003

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- USC women's tennis senior Jewel Peterson ended her run at the 2003 NCAA Singles Championships Friday afternoon with a two-set loss to Stanford's Amber Lui in a semifinal match in Gainesville, Fla. After making four-consecutive trips to the postseason individual tournament, this was Peterson's career-best finish.

Due to rain, the semifinal singles and doubles matches were moved indoors at the Linder Stadium Complex, but it did not affect Peterson and Lui as they put on an outstanding display. The pair alternated points for the first 10 games of the first set to reach a 5-5 tie score. At that point, the fifth-seeded Lui broke Peterson's serve to go ahead 6-5 and eventually won the final point for the set, 7-5.

Peterson may not have had much left after a week's worth of outstanding tennis. The eighth-seeded USC senior endured a 6-0 loss in the second set for the match to complete her trip at the 2003 tournament. Lui advances to the championship match and will face top-seed Vilmarie Castellvi of Tennessee on Saturday.

As one of the top 10 collegiate women's tennis players this season and a semifinalist at the NCAA Championships, Peterson earned her fourth-straight ITA All-American honor. She is the first Trojan since Trisha Laux (1988-91) to accomplish the feat.
