USC's Boren/Katz Advance To NCAA Doubles Round of 16
May 22, 2014
ATHENS, GA. -- USC's senior-freshman combo pack of Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz grabbed a straight-set win in their NCAA Doubles Round of 32 debut together today in Athens, Ga. The Trojans' victory pushes them through to tomorrow's Round of 16, of which fellow Women of Troy Giuliana Olmos and Zoë Scandalis have come of short following singles and doubles losses today in the Round of 32.
Both Olmos and Scandalis had tough draws to get through in singles action. Olmos was up against Saint Mary's #11 Jenny Jullien, while Scandalis had to square off against #1 Jamie Loeb of North Carolina. First on court today again was #60 Olmos, who stumbled in her first set against Jullien before powering up in the second. She'd get up 4-1 before the #11 Gael managed to fight back and force a tiebreaker. Down 1-5 in the breaker, Olmos battled back but came up short of forcing a third set in taking a 6-4, 7-6 (4) loss. That wrapped up her singles run on the season, giving Olmos a team-best 25 singles wins for a 25-11 record in singles overall.
Scandalis -- ranked #19 in the nation in singles -- finishes her junior campaign at 23-11 overall after falling 6-3, 6-2 to the tournament's top-seeded and #1 ranked Loeb today in the NCAA Round of 32. She and Olmos would reconvene as doubles partners later in the day, however, matched up against another set of seeded opponents. Ranked #11 in the nation together in doubles, Olmos/Scandalis went up against #4 ranked and fourth-seeded Jansen/Routliffe of Alabama to open the NCAA Doubles Round of 32. The higher seeded pair was up to the task, fending off the Trojan duo with a 6-3, 6-2 decision that wrapped up Olmos and Scandalis' competition in Athens. As a team this season, Olmos/Scandalis posted a 22-8 overall record together.
Fellow Women of Troy Brynn Boren and Zoë Katz also squared off against seeded opponents in their Round of 32 match. Ranked #16 in the land, USC's Boren/Katz had drawn against #7 Elbaba/Pierson of Virginia, a 5-8 seeded team in the draw. In the first set, the Trojans and Cavaliers were largely in stride. That is, until the Women of Troy each held serve to wrap around a break of UVA. Boren's hold capped off a 6-3 win in the first set for USC. The next set stayed tight, stretching into a long tiebreaker in which the Trojans had to fight off set point a 6-7. Boren went big at the net with a couple nice shots to put USC up 8-7. Elbaba/Pierson countered to pull even, but a UVA double fault and then a finishing touch from the Trojans put an exclamation point on a 6-3, 7-6 (8) upset win for USC's Boren/Katz. They now move on to go up against Auburn's #15 Burgmans/Flickinger tomorrow in the Round of 16.
