    Peterson, Magnani Advance At NCAA Singles Championships

    Gainesville, Fla. - USC's Jewel Peterson and Luana Magnani won their opening round matches Monday, May 19, at the 2003 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships in Gainesville, Fla. The pair advances to the second round and will play Tuesday, May 20, at 9 a.m. EST.

    Peterson, seeded eighth in the 64-player event, defeated Manon Kruse of Middle Tennessee State, 6-3, 7-5, and will face Marlene Mejia of North Carolina tomorrow. Unseeded Magnani defeated Tulsa's Aleksandra Durksa, 6-0, 6-3, to advance. Magnani will face seventh-seeded Adria Engel of Arizona State in the second round.

    Senior Maureen Diaz also competed in today's first round, but was eliminated with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Alix Lacelarie of Clemson.

    The doubles championship also begins on Tuesday. Peterson and senior Tiffany Brymer face Northwestern's Jessica Rush and Cristelle Grier in the first round at 2 p.m.
