    Women's Tennis Slips by Washington

    May 16, 1998

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Second-seeded Southern California swept doubles play to complete a furious rally and defeat unseeded Washington 5-4 in the first round of the NCAA women's tennis regional being played on the campus of UNLV. Southern California, ranked 21st, improved its record to 12-10, while the Huskies, ranked 54th, finished the season 12-8.

The Huskies had the early lead when when four out of six singles matches were won by Kristina Kraszewski, Zuzana Stunova, Erica Stoloff and Peggy Wu. But in doubles competion, Washington was shut out.

"USC played well in doubles to come back and beat us," Washington Head Coach Patty McCain said. "We played well, the best we've played all year and that's all you can ask for."

"We were very fortunate," USC Head Coach Richard Gallien said. "Washington has nothing by class. Patty has done a great job in her first year. We didn't do a great job in the singles. Nine out of ten of those matches you lose. We were due to win one like this."

Next week, May 25-29, Husky freshman Kristina Kraszewski will participate in singles competition at the NCAA Championships held at Notre Dame. This is the first NCAA invitation for women's singles in Husky history. Kraszewski is currently ranked 26th in the nation and owns a 28-8 record. The freshman has been named Rookie of the Year for the northwest region and has been selected for second team All Pac-10 honors.
