No. 18 USC Advances with 4-1 Win Over Gaels|

BERKELEY, Calif. - The 18th-ranked USC women's tennis team (15-7) defeated No. 42 Saint Mary's College (13-10) in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Sat., May 14. The Women of Troy advances to face Cal in the second round at noon PT on Sun., May 15.
Saint Mary's threw the first punch and landed an 8-6 win at the top court as Anna Chikhikvishvili and Alexandra Poorta put on the jets to pull off the upset win over USC's fourth-ranked tandem of Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez. On court two, Lyndsay Kinstler and Valeria Pulido fell behind the count, 4-1, to Jenny Jullien and Claire Soper, but the Trojans fought to tie the match at six-all and went on to win, 8-6, to knot the race to the doubles point.
Down at court three, USC's No. 77-ranked duo of Cristala Andrews and Alison Ramos found itself stuck in a battle with Diana Bukajeva and Catherine Isip. The two teams arrived at a seven-all tie, but the Gaels broke Ramos' serve to claim a 9-7 win, and the doubles point.
USC tied the match at one all off a bicycle win by Andrews at the sixth court as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Alita Fisher, and went ahead, 2-1, when No. 24-ranked Danielle Lao took out No 80 Isip, 6-1, 6-0, at court two.
At the top court, No. 2-ranked Sanchez dropped her first set, 6-3, to No. 46-ranked Poorta, but was up, 2-1, in the second. Pulido pushed the Trojans ahead, 3-1, on a win at No. 5 singles as she defeated Soper, 6-2, 6-1. Ramos secured the clinching point from court four on a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jullien.
Sanchez's match was suspended, as was the match at court three where No. 103 Christian had a 2-0 lead in the second after snagging the first set with an 8-6 come-from-behind win in the first-set tiebreaker.
