    Women of Troy Advance With Win Over American

    LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked USC women's tennis team defeated American, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament played at Marks Tennis Stadium on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Women of Troy improve to 17-6 overall and will face No. 41 Arizona in the second round on Saturday, May 15, at 3 p.m. The Wildcats defeated Indiana Friday morning for the right to advance.

    Making its first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, American earned an automatic berth by winning the Patriot League Conference. The Eagles completed their season with a 16-9 overall record.

    The Women of Troy earned the first point of the afternoon with decisive doubles victories on courts one and three. USC's duo of Bernadette Bayani and Judy DeVera swept American's Ashley Retlev and Tessa Hollyn-Taub, 8-0, at the No. 3 spot, and sixth-ranked Luana Magnani and Carine Vermeulen defeated Kristina Georgieva and Katarina Kollarova, 8-2, at center court.

    In singles, USC allowed no more than four points in a single set and held the lead from the start on all six courts. Bernadette Bayani was the first off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 win on the backcourts and Vermeulen finished soon after with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 2. Magnani eventually sealed the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Georgieva at No. 1. The remaining matches were suspended.

    Saturday also marks the start of the men's NCAA first and second rounds at Marks Stadium. The first round match-up between San Diego and California begins at 9 a.m., followed by the USC-Montana State match at noon.
