Troy Polishes Off Boston In NCAA First Round NCAA|

No. 8 USC, making its 16th consecutive and 23rd overall NCAA appearance, defeated Boston, 4-0, in an NCAA Championships Women's Tennis first round match at USC's Marks Stadium on Saturday (May 12).
USC improved to 18-4 while Boston, in its ninth NCAA Championships, fell to 13-6 in the schools' first meeting. The victory was Troy's 50th overall in NCAA Tournament play (against 22 losses). USC is after its eighth team title.
USC took command of the doubles play, as Trojans Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink downed Boston's Erin Katims and Francine Whu, 8-2, and Sarah Fansler and Lindsey Nelson defeated Rebecca Row and Yana Sadovskaya, 8-3. Troy's Dianne Matias and Julie Smekodub were leading 7-2 and on the verge of defeating Katie Draganova and Elizabeth Corrao when doubles play was suspended.
Anca Anastasiu got off USC's singles to a good start with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Whu at No. 4. Soon after, Fink closed out her No. 3 singles match over Row, 6-2, 6-0.
DeVera clinched the match by finishing off Corrao at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Nelson led Katims, 6-2, 4-0 at No. 1, Fansler led Sadovskaya, 6-3, 2-2 at No. 2 and Matias led Cori Lefkowith, 6-0, 4-4 at No. 5 when play was stopped.
USC will play Texas in second round action at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Trojans defeated the Longhorns, 6-1, earlier this season in a non-conference match on March 14 at Marks Stadium.
