Lindsey Nelson Claims Pac-10 Singles Title
April 29, 2007
OJAI, CALIF. - USC junior Lindsey Nelson never surrendered a single set during her run to the 2007 Pac-10 Singles Championship. After a smooth run through the first three days of action, Nelson came up against defending NCAA Singles champ Susie Babos of Cal. Nelson didn't miss a step. The Trojans pounded out a 6-2, 6-2 win over Babos in the Pac-10 singles final, claiming her first Pac-10 title on Sunday morning in Ojai, Calif. Senior Julie Smekodub almost mirrored Nelson's dominant run through Pac-10 play in Ojai. Competing in the Pac-10 invitational draw, Smekodub also never gave up a set during her entire run through the draw. In her first Pac-10 tournament after transferring to USC from Tulane, Smekodub took her draw by storm and capped off a winning first three days with a final early-morning championship win over Arizona State's Laila Abdala in a resounding 6-1, 6-4 decision. Nelson's matchup with Babos represented a rematch of the 2006 NCAA Singles Championship, which Babos won with a two-set decision over Nelson. The pair clashed twice more during dual match play this season, splitting those matches. WOMEN'S SINGLES COMPETITION Women's Tournament Singles Results #10 Sarah Fansler #73 Amanda Fink
