Nelson and Fink Move On In Pac-10 Women's Singles Race|
April 28, 2006
OJAI, CALIF. -- The No. 2-ranked USC women's tennis team will have two representatives moving on to the third day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. Sophomore Lindsey Nelson and freshman Amanda Fink both won their quarterfinal matches on Friday and will advance to Saturday's semifinal singles play. If Nelson and Fink both win in the semis, the Trojan duo would meet in the Pac-10 singles championship match at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Nelson, who reached the quarterfinals as a freshman, beat Stanford's Theresa Logar in Friday's quarters 6-4, 6-3 to ensure her place in Saturday's semifinals. Fink also pumped out a two-set win in her quarterfinal match, topping Cal's Suzi Babos 6-3, 7-5 to move on. Nelson will face Cal's Suzi Fodor in the semis at 11 a.m., while Fink battles Stanford's Alica Barnes in her semifinal match at the same time.
USC had three doubles teams in the Pac-10 tournament, and two pairs pushed through to the quarterfinals with an opening win. The quarterfinal round was not as successful for the Women of Troy, however, as two losses ended the Trojans' doubles runs. Dianne Matias / Carine Vermeulen pushed past Cal's Bobusic/Kusano with an 8-3 decision, but later fell to Arizona State's Clarke/Pooler 8-4 in teh quarters. Luana Magnani / Lindsey Nelson also notched an opening win with an 8-3 defeat of Arizona's Balzert/Mavroleon, only to fal 8-3 to UCLA's Gordon/Zalameda in the next round. USC's third doubles team of Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink lost 8-4 in the first round to Cal's Babos/Fodor.
On the men's side of Pac-10 competition, with no more singles players left in the mix, the Trojans had several doubles duos take the court on Friday. Dejan Cvetkovic / Kaes Van't Hof posted a first-round win over Arizona State's Hegarty Miller with an 8-6 victory, but fell in their quarterfinal bout with Stanford's Corkery/Pade by the same score to end the Trojans' doubles tournament run. Adam Loucks / Garrett Snyder had come up against UCLA's #2-ranked Gruendler/Kohlloeffel and fell 8-3 in the first round. The only Trojan pair still going is Whit Livingston / Nathan Stadler, who earned a bye in the first round of the invitational doubles action and then notched an 8-4 win over Stanford's Wan/Wong in the invitational quarterfinals.
